overnight oats — I know, I know, bear with me
Right so I've resisted posting about overnight oats for ages because honestly it felt too obvious. But I've had three clients this week tell me they skip breakfast because they 'don't have time', and I just... I had to say something.
This is the version I actually make. Not the influencer one with twelve toppings.
Ingredients (1 serving)
- 60g rolled oats (not instant — the texture is completely different)
- 180ml whole milk or oat milk
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tsp honey or maple syrup
- Small handful of whatever fruit you have — I usually do frozen berries straight in
- Pinch of cinnamon
- Optional: 1 tbsp nut butter stirred through in the morning
Method
Stir everything together in a jar or container. That's it. Lid on, fridge overnight, eat cold in the morning or give it 60 seconds in the microwave if you want it warm. The chia seeds bulk it out and make it more filling — that's the trick, honestly. Without them it's fine but you'll be hungry by 10.
Nutritionally speaking, this comes in around 380–420 kcal depending on your milk and toppings, with roughly 12–14g protein if you use dairy milk and add nut butter. The oats give you slow-release carbohydrate which matters a lot first thing — blood sugar stays steadier than if you'd had toast or nothing at all. Chia seeds add a bit of omega-3 and fibre, both useful.
You can swap the honey for nothing if you prefer it unsweetened — the fruit usually does enough. Dairy-free works fine, just be aware oat milk is lower in protein so factor that in if that matters to you. And if you're genuinely not a cold breakfast person, warm it up. I do it about half the time in winter.
